Description
Inaugural Clinical Director of Transplant Medicine for University of Colorado Hospital & Section Head of Transplant Medicine in the Department of Medicine
The University of Colorado Department of Medicine invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Inaugural Clinical Director of Transplant Medicine for University of Colorado Hospital & Section Head of Transplant Medicine in the Department of Medicine.
Founded in 1883, the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU) has a long tradition of innovation, from admitting women on an equal basis in its earliest days to performing the world’s first successful human liver transplant in 1963. Today, CU remains defined by its pioneering spirit and commitment to advancing medicine. With the arrival of Dr. John H. Sampson as Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and Dean in 2024, the School of Medicine is entering a dynamic era of strategic growth. In partnership with UCHealth, CU is launching an ambitious new chapter in transplantation.
The University of Colorado Department of Medicine and UCHealth seek a nationally respected physician–scientist to serve as the Inaugural Clinical Director of Transplant Medicine for the Transplant Center and Section Head of Transplant Medicine in the Department of Medicine, a newly established, institutionally supported section and the only one of its kind in the nation (the section will become its own Division within the Department of Medicine in the next 6 – 9 months and this leader will become the inaugural Division Head). This leader will help shape the future of transplant care across kidney, liver, heart, lung, and transplant infectious diseases.
Reporting as the senior medical partner in a dyad leadership model, the Clinical Director/Section Head will play a central role in defining the vision, strategy, and growth of transplant medicine across the Transplant Center, the Department of Medicine, and the broader health system. The successful candidate will be an experienced builder and unifier, capable of fostering collaboration among clinicians, scientists, and educators while strengthening partnerships with cardiology and other key specialties.
Key priorities include recruiting and mentoring exceptional faculty; advancing innovative clinical models; driving quality, outcomes, and sustainable growth; and elevating UCHealth’s position in an increasingly competitive national landscape. The leader will promote a culture centered on patient impact, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Equally critical is the advancement of a bold research mission. The Clinical Director/Section Head will unify basic, translational, clinical, and population-based research efforts; expand clinical trials infrastructure; and position the Section and Transplant Center as national destinations for scientific discovery and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Candidates must hold an MD or MD/PhD (or equivalent), be board-certified in a relevant subspecialty, and qualify for appointment at the Professor level at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. They will bring a distinguished record of scholarship, leadership, and national or international influence in transplant medicine.
This is a rare opportunity to define a new model for transplant care, research, and education, and to build a lasting legacy at one of the nation’s most innovative academic medical centers.
